Earl E. Shejen

Earl “Dozer Man” Shejen, 88, died peacefully with his family at his side on August 26, 2017.

A native of York, Earl was born on 27 May, 1929 to Amy Elizabeth Shejen.

Early on he attended York Schools but quit at the age of 14 to work full time for a local contractor as a laborer cutting and hauling logs, and in the winter cutting and delivering ice.

Earl was drafted during the Korean War at the age of 22 and served two years in the Army stationed in Hamburg, Germany.

Earl worked for Abbott Brothers in Cape Neddick for over 50yrs as a heavy equipment operator and retired at the young age of 75.

If you drive in any neighborhood in the town of York chances are you are looking at a home or a business that Earl has worked on. Many local builders that used Abbot Brothers for their site work would ask for Earl by name so “they didn’t have to worry about it”. Whether you were a builder or the owner, when Earl graded around your building you knew he was painting a picture…he just used a Bulldozer.

Sometimes he used this gift to contribute to the local sports teams where he graded athletic fields for little league teams, York Schools and other local organizations.

Rarely a day passed in his life when someone did not approach him to thank him for the work done on their home or ask him some advice on how to approach their next project.

On July 20, 1957 he married the love of his life, Constance Elizabeth Moulton at the Cape Neddick Baptist Church. They had two children and spent 60 happy years together.

Earl had a second home on Mousam Lake in Acton, Me. He took great delight in “going to camp”, spending time relaxing in his favorite chair and listening to his wife play the piano  while “singing along” with the whole neighborhood as he looked out onto the cove filled with boats shouting requests.

Earl was also an avid deer hunter and took many trophies. He loved the heat of the chase as much as the quiet of the woods.

Later in life he found he had another passion…Football. In the nine years his grandson Alex played football for York Schools he never missed a single game. He freely admitted he didn’t know all the rules but he only needed to know “which way they’re headed”. This new passion spilled over into Sundays when he could be heard to say “Whattya think’a that Brady”?

Earl never believed in “talking a good game”, he felt that your work ethic and devotion to family show who you really are. He truly loved getting up to go to work every day and had no patience with anything less than your very best.

Earl is predeceased by his siblings: Harry, Betty and Danny Shejen. He leaves behind his wife of 60yrs, Constance Elizabeth, his two children; Edsel Earl Shejen of York, and Lauraine Amy Touati of Biddeford and his grandson Alex Seac of York whom he thought the world of. He is survived by his sister Winnie Brayton of Florida and many nieces, nephews and incredible friends that he also cherished.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday Sep. 6th at 11:00 am in the First Parish Cemetery.
