York, Maine- Ellen Washington Dawson, 73, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 in York Hospital with her family by her side. She was born July 30, 1944 in Annapolis, MD, a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret E. (Hamilton) Washington, Jr. She was a member of the Piscataqua Garden Club, Garden Club of America, Hurricane Island Outward Bound, York Land Trust, Yankee Alaskan Malamute Club, Maine Island Trail Association, Agamenticus Yacht Club and a Governor of the York Harbor Reading Room. She held degrees from Wellesley College (BA) and Tufts University (MA). With her boundless curiosity and sense of adventure, she enjoyed sailing, dog sledding, gardening, and horseback riding. An avid world traveler and reader, she visited nearly every continent and spoke or read five languages. She was a skilled photographer and flower arranger, including the demanding art of Ikebana. She leaves her husband of 47 years, Stuart O. Dawson; two daughters, Julie A. Orsatti and her husband Joseph of Hudson, MA, and Emilie D. Carter and her husband Greg of Amherst, NH; a son Mark O. Dawson and his wife Doreen of Watertown, MA; a sister, Anne Simunovic and her husband Sergio of Newton, MA; a niece Angela S. Erb; three nephews, Sergio and Thomas Simunovic, and John Buford; eight grandchildren, Benjamin, Travis, and Lauren Mazerall, Theresa Cantella, Louis and Thomas Orsatti, Maggie and Patrick Dawson; and three great-grandchildren, Brendan, Maddie, and Penelope.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:30 to 5 pm on Friday, May 25th in the York Harbor Reading Room.
