Florence E. Metcalfe

Sanford, Maine - Florence E. Gates Metcalfe, 79, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Sentry Hill of York Harbor. She was born August 12, 1938 in Millinocket, Maine the daughter of the late Harold and Loretta (Cyr) Gates of Sanford.

Florence spent over 20 years raising her children Doug and Beth in Burlington, MA.  She was known to support their sport teams and extra-curricular efforts whole heartedly.  She was the former Director of Nursing at the Winchester Nursing Center, part of Salter Healthcare in Winchester, MA and later taught Nursing in Maine. She leaves a son Douglas Gates Metcalfe and his wife Maria of Stoneham, MA and a daughter Beth Ann Scanlon and her husband James of Kingston, NH; 5 grandchildren Bianca Gates Streep, Michaela E. Streep, James J. Scanlon, Nicholas Metcalfe and Derek Metcalfe.

Florence was known to love, spoil and support her 5 grandchildren.  Whether she follow them to a hockey rink, soccer field or the lake; her presence was always known.  Her warm capacity, intelligence and great humor made her a favorite at gatherings.  Known to read several books in a week; she always had a quick quip to say or knowledge to share. She is already missed dearly by her family and dear friends.

Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Shriner’s or the Humane Society.
