Michael J. Major Obituary

In loving memory of Dr. Michael (Mike) John Major (55), whose unexpected departure on March 9th, 2024 left a profound impact on his family, friends, colleagues and community. His legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born September 26, 1968, in Hinsdale, NH, Mike was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Karalyn of 25 years and proud father to his two sons, Benjamin and Matthew. Mike was the youngest of five siblings and a graduate of UNH and Dartmouth Medical School.

With a zest for adventure, a love for the outdoors (and a known weakness for donuts), Mike lived life to the fullest with intense passion and joy. He made every moment count – spending time with family and friends at Moosehead Lake, cheering on his beloved Bruins and listening to his favorite albums. He was an avid reader of history and enjoyed many hobbies; snowmobiling, mountain biking, men’s league hockey, and golf as a longtime member of York Golf & Tennis Club. Much like his dad, Mike had the ability to build and fix most anything and was generous with his time to help others with their projects. His garage, filled with projects ranging from motorcycles to cars also reflected his ingenuity and passion for all things mechanical.

In addition to his passions, Mike’s career as a respected physician at York Hospital further exemplified his unwavering commitment and generosity to others, whether it be to those he held nearest to him or to his patients. His dedication to excellence and always doing the right thing, coupled with his quick wit and caring demeanor, left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to his wife and two sons, Mike is survived by his mother Mary Major; siblings Brian Major (Jody); Susan Goodrich (Dana); Theresa Gable (Jan); Debra Carrier (Michael); aunt Patti Buraczynski; and his Canadian in-laws, Mary Alma Smith; Stephen Smith (Julie); Barry G. Smith; and Sarah Jayne Smith (Terence). “Uncle Mike” loved his nieces and nephews; Michelle, Ellen, Alyssa, Brendan, Emily, Oliver, Garrett, Rachael, Maya and Olivia and his grand nephews and grandnieces. Mike was predeceased by his father Lewis Major, and father in-law Guy Smith.

The Major family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff at the Portsmouth Hospital and York Hospital for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time. They are also so very thankful for the overwhelming outpouring of support from family, friends, and community.

Mike’s final gift of organ donation was a reflection of his respect for human life, his generous spirit, and his caring heart. To honor Mike's legacy and to help others in need, please consider registering as an organ donor to carry forward Mike's spirit of giving.

Mike will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His memory will forever endure in the hearts of the many whose lives he touched.
