Andrew J. Belliveau

Andrew “Andy” Belliveau passed away peacefully on January 15, 2020 at Berwick Estates in South Berwick, Maine.  His daughters Dawn Belliveau and Michelle Hanson were able to be by his side to comfort him.  Andy was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on October 7, 1939.  He served in the Marine Corps for over twenty years.  Andy was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute and was fluent in Mandarin and Vietnamese.  He completed multiple tours of duty in Vietnam, serving as an Interrogation Translator. Andy’s military experience defined him and all who knew him would agree “once a Marine, always a Marine.”  Even after retiring from the Marine Corps, Andy regularly attended (and very much enjoyed) Marine Corp Intelligence Association reunions and was an active member of the Marine Corps Interrogator Translator Team Association. Following his retirement to York, Maine in the summer of 1978, Andy enjoyed the good life, living near Short Sands, completing his degree in engineering and working at York Hospital for nearly twenty years. Andy was an active member of the York community serving as a volunteer firefighter on the York Beach Fire Department and as a trustee on the York Water District for many years. After retiring from his “second” career, Andy kept busy, working at Durgin Pines, a local hardware store, and preparing tax returns for the elderly.  In the months leading up to his decline in health he found yoga through Yoga in ME’s yoga for veterans program and was even studying to become an instructor; this experience gave him a lot of hope and healing.  

Andy’s wife Dottie passed away 20 years ago and he missed her dearly all those years.  In addition to his daughters, Andy is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Belliveau) Marquis, his grandchildren Sam, Jonah and Lucia, and his son-in-law Bob Hanson.  Most that knew Andy would agree that he had a bit of a gruff, intimidating exterior but beneath it all, he had a heart of gold.  He was blessed with a quick wit and could deliver a one-liner like no-one else. He loved his children and grandchildren fiercely and they were his greatest source of joy. Andy is also survived by innumerable friends and family, including Gretchen Seaver, MaryAnne Szeniawski, Mary Coughlin, Linda Azzarito; the Azzarito, White, Fyfe and Hanson families and many cherished nieces and nephews.  Andy, or “Frenchy” as he’s known to them, is also held close in the hearts of his military buddies. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Berwick Estates, 79 Portland St, South Berwick, ME 03908, where he received not only great care, but true love and affection.  Dawn and Michelle thank the Berwick Estates team (Rebecca, Elizabeth, Jill, Kayla, Caroline, Sue, Nate, Judy, Aphasia and Mindy) as well as his wonderful Wentworth Hospice team (Nancy, Anne and Chris) for loving him and helping him go peacefully.
