Barbara A. Desrochers Obituary

Barbara Ann (DeCiantis) Desrochers

January 16, 1941-November 3, 2019

Barbara, long time resident of York, devoted wife, mother, advocate, and volunteer, passed from complications of dementia. Barbara was well known for her involvement with St. Christopher’s and Star of the Sea Parish, now Ascension of the Lord Parish, 1981-2014, as well as her role as Administrative Assistant at York Hospital Rehabilitation Department and Lab from 1981-1996. Barbara was instrumental with developing the ministry program at York Hospital. It was her calling to bring communion to patients and to community members.  Her family is comforted that she knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Barbara was originally from West Warwick, RI, graduated St. Xavier’s High School and received an Associate Degree in Accounting from Johnson & Wales College. Barbara had a great sense of humor, loved being silly, and enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, and gardening.

Family was most important to Barbara. She cherished her husband Mike for 53 years, he was her everything-her world. She delighted in watching their daughters, Barbara Desrochers Alberda, Margaret Desrochers, and Michelle Desrochers Smith live their lives. She loved being grandma to Amanda Alberda, Amy Smith, and Kevin Smith, so proud of her grandchildren. She welcomed her son-in-laws Pete Alberda and Stephen Smith to the family with open arms and love. Barbara also cherished her sister, Doris DeCiantis Arthur; brother, James and sister-in-law, Patricia DeCiantis; and brother, Richard DeCiantis; and all of their children and grandchildren. Barbara had many friends who were steadfast and faithful through her illness and their kindness was a blessing to her. Barbara developed a special friendship with Lisa Boucher whose love and care comforted her over the past two years.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, James and Doris DeCiantis and beloved daughter, Michelle M. Desrochers Smith.
