Dana G. Willard, 80, passed away Friday, January 5th, 2018 in York, Maine after a brief illness.

He was born in Portland, Maine on September 14, 1937 to Philip G. and Narcissa Peace (Varney) Willard.  Dana grew up in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School in 1955. He went to Brown University where he graduated with a degree in physics in 1959.  He continued his education with a master’s degree from Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee where he met his wife, Hilda Jo (Ray) Willard. Together they had two sons, Steve and George.

Dana started his career in the physical sciences working for High Voltage Engineering in greater Boston. Later he left the world of physics to help run the Willard - Daggett Fish & Lobster Company in Portland for over a decade.  He returned to Massachusetts in 1978 where he worked in the software industry for the rest of his career, ultimately retiring from Lucent Technologies in 2001.  He retired to York and spent winters at Amelia Island, Florida for most of his later years.

He had a very strong interest in the arts and painted throughout most of his adult life.  He was an avid reader and had a deep interest in advanced physics, probability, and math.  He volunteered his time helping with shoreline profiling in the town of York and he assisted with educational programs at the Laudholm Farm in Wells.

Dana was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda in 1991 and his brother Philip in 1997.  He is survived by his sister Barbara (Jiggs) Zamierowski of Leesburg, Florida; sons Stephen (Laura) Willard of Decatur, Georgia and George Willard of York, and grandchildren, Adrienne and Carson of Decatur, Georgia.
