Donald J Goodwin of York, ME, passed away in his sleep Monday June 25, from extended health issues, surrounded by love in the house that he helped to build. He was 87.
Don was predeceased by his wife Marguerite (Grete), who was the love of his life, and survived by their children Erik, Hannah, Laurel and Kurt, his daughter-in-law Beth, his sons-in-law Joel and Steve, and his grandchildren Sarah, Megan, Michael, Adrian, Liana and Ella, and his great-grand-daughter Dublin.
Don grew up in Somerville MA, but fell in love with Maine when he came here to work as a teenager. It was also where he fell in love with his wife and where they built their home and family. He was a US Navy veteran, and a UMass graduate. He spent over 30 years in education as a teacher, principal and textbook author. He cared deeply about his students and helping people succeed - once set up a high school equivalency course at Pease Air Force Base as an example. He was a trained geologist but natural teacher. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing and people, and was always out to learn.
A memorial service for friends and family will be scheduled later in the summer or fall. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
