Karen M. Bates

On Friday, November 8, 2019, Karen M. Bates of South Berwick ME, wife of the late Darrel R. Bates, passed away at the age of 80 after a rapid decline in health.  Her daughter Karyn, son and daughter-in-law Nick and Natasha, and granddaughter April were by her side when she passed.

Karen was born in Waltham MA on July 29, 1939 to the late Mary and Mark Maloney.  Karen leaves four siblings:  Joanne Tocci and her husband “Toss” of Chandler AZ, Billy Maloney of Cambridge VT, Cathy Farrell and her husband Connie of York ME, and Judy Callahan and her husband Larry of Brockton MA.  Karen is survived by her two children and three step-children: Nicolas Bates and his wife Natasha of Prince Frederick MD, Karyn Noelle and her husband Ty Atherholt of Wilmington VT, Danny Bates and his wife Kathleen of Chatham MA, Billie Bates of Chatham MA, and Terry Bassett and her husband Herb of Chatham MA.  Her son Christopher D. Bates predeceased her in 1993.  She leaves twelve grandchildren:  April and Megan Maguire, Jacquie and Nate Bates, Luther and Austin Bates, Cooper and Katheryn Kelsey, Annie Haven, Rebecca Brooks, Herb Bassett, Dorothy Bassett and seven great-grandchildren:  Lucy and Mya Bates, Sonia and Hallie Haven, Christopher and Brinley Brooks, Xander Bates and many loving nieces and nephews.

A Catholic funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 15, at 11am in St. Raphael’s Church, 6 Whipple Road, Kittery, ME.  Interment will follow at the West Parish Cemetery, 129 Reservation Road, Andover, MA at 1pm.  Relatives and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Chateau Restaurant, 131 River Road, Andover, MA from 2pm to 4 pm.
