Richard S. Marshall Obituary

Richard Scamman “Dick” Marshall, 86, died December 18, 2019 at his home in York, Maine with his family at his side.

Born May 3, 1933, the son of Marguerite and Carroll Marshall of South Portland, Maine,  he had been a York resident since 1980. He, his wife Gail (Perry) and four daughters previously lived in Scituate, MA.

Mr. Marshall met his future wife in Ogunquit, ME on a blind date in the summer of 1955, beginning a more than 60-year love story. They were married on August 23, 1958. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the summer of 2018 with their family at a lake house in Maine.

Mr. Marshall graduated in 1951 from South Portland High School where he had been an all-state athlete in football, track and baseball.  He went on to Tufts University in Medford, MA where he studied business, was a running back on the Jumbo’s football team and president of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity. He graduated from Tufts University and began an almost 40-year career with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He held a wide range of positions before being transferred in 1979 to Portsmouth, NH where he led the company’s new data processing center. He retired as a Vice President in 1995.

After moving to York, he was an active participant at St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor.

He also was a member of York Golf and Tennis Club. An avid golfer, Mr. Marshall was active in club committees, and a regular in club tournaments, the Birdie Train as well as Southern Maine Seniors and Maine Seniors.

On his 75th birthday, he missed a 4 foot putt on the 18th hole to shoot his age. He also got his only hole in one in 50-plus years of golf in 2006 on the 7th hole.

The Marshalls also spent more than 20 winters in Venice, Florida.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four daughters, Susan Holz and her husband, Bob of Marietta, Georgia; Carol Carmichael and her husband, Brian, of Andover, Massachusetts; Anne Goodwin and her husband, Scott, of South Berwick, Maine; Kate Ford and her husband, Mark, of York, Maine; ten grandchildren, Molly, Julia, Charlotte, Dylan, Elizabeth, Brenden, Emma, Sarah, Marshall and Lilly; his brother, Grover and his wife Linda, and his sister-in-law, Joanne MacKenzie.
