York, ME-Roberta Nan "Bobbie" Lucas, 77, died peacefully December 10, 2018 following a long period of declining health. Born on April 23, 1947, Bobbie was a York girl for much of her life, having grown up on York Street, graduated from York High School, and lived in York dormitory at the University of Maine; and she returned to York to live after adventures far away. She was an outstanding student throughout her high school, undergraduate (University of Maine), and graduate school ( Purdue, UNH, Arizona State) years; and she taught at all levels of education, elementary through college. Before embarking on her graduate studies and teaching career, she took an extended trip around the USA, and the wonderful experiences she had remained a treasured memory throughout her life. Following a brief marriage in 1970, she realized her dream of teaching both Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL). She lived for short periods of time in Mexico, Colombia, and Peru in order to be the best Spanish speaker she could be, for Bobbie strove for excellence in all she undertook. When mental illness robbed her of the ability to teach, she strove for excellence in housekeeping jobs in York. When she could no longer live independently and when her illness permitted, Bobbie blessed other residents in group homes in South Berwick and York with her compassion and concern for them. When she had to move to Kennebunk Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, she encouraged workers there with her interest in and encouragement of them. Her faith being an important part of her life, and despite her own burdens, she prayed frequently for her friends, about whom she cared deeply; and she encouraged them with notes and cards. All of them greatly appreciated her words and her sense of humor, which remained intact until her death. She was predeceased by both parents and a special cousin, Ned Lucas; she is survived by her aunt, Fay Boardman, and many cousins. Her family greatly appreciates the care she received in Kennebunk and the help and care of Beacon Hospice. A graveside service will be held in the First Parish Cemetery on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11am.
