York, Maine- Stephen "Steve" C. O'Brien, 81, of Field Avenue, passed away peacefully November 8, 2018 at Holy Family Hospital, Methuen, MA from complications of a stroke. He was born August 28, 1937 in Westborough, MA to Frederick J. and Harriet M. (Blakely) O'Brien. He graduated from Marlborough High School in 1956 where he excelled as a 2 sport athlete in football and hockey. In 2006 Steve was inducted into the Marlborough High School Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation he served proudly in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Suffolk County. Upon returning home after discharge Steve worked in the Public Works Department for several years before starting his own business, SCOB Trucking, doing excavation work. He also continued his football career playing semi-pro ball for the Marlborough Shamrocks and was recognized for many years as an All Star. Eventually he relocated to York, Maine where he met the love of his life, Ellie. The handsome bachelor was immediately smitten with Ellie and they shared over 38 years together. During his years in York he worked at Pease Air Base, then Metcalf and Eddy doing excavation work. After retiring he continued to do work for local people and worked until this past summer. He also served many years as a volunteer Firefighter in York and was active in the American Legion. He leaves his wife Eleanor F. Chambers; step-sons, Jeffrey Chambers and his wife Ellen Goodrow of Kittery, ME and Matthew Chambers of York, ME. He was the proud and adoring Bampa to Kiley and Brian Chambers of Kittery, ME and Mary and Abigail Chambers of Westborough, MA. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Barry, Edward and James O'Brien and a sister Esther San Clemente.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Friday, Nov. 16th in St. Christopher's Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, Maine where he met Ellie. Burial will be private. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine is assisting with arrangements. Visit ww.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com
