Albert L. Sciaky Obituary

Albert Sciaky: March 3 1932-Dec 30 2020

Albert Louis Sciaky passed away peacefully in his home in York Harbor, Maine on December 30th 2020 in the presence of his family. He is survived by his daughter Elena, two sons Richard and Christopher and his grandchildren Rosamund, Elizabeth Edward and Melanie. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Rosamund’s two children, Nora and Frederik.

Albert was born March 3, 1932, in Paris, France, the son of Maurice and Odette Sciaky. He left France with his mother and sister in 1940 under the threat of the Nazi invasion, to join his father in the U.S. where his father and uncles had just established the American branch of their France-based Sciaky Brothers company, an enterprise based on the invention of an electron beam welding machine by Albert’s uncle, David Sciaky.

The family settled in Chicago, where Albert attended the University of Chicago.

He served in the U.S. Army Special Forces in 1954 and 1955 and was awarded three bronze stars and two silver stars for his heroic behavior.

He married Maria Caridad Lara in 1956 and settled in Chicago where they raised their three children. They began spending summers in York Harbor in 1963 and in 1986 Albert and Maria became year-round residents.

Albert served as president and CEO of Sciaky Brothers in the 1960s and 70s. He received an award in 2007 acknowledging his

eminence in the welding profession from the American Welding Society and later worked as a business executive and consultant with a specialty in start ups and venture capital investments.

Albert was an avid reader of literature and history. He had a vast library that he encouraged his children and grandchildren to peruse, often giving them books that caught their interest.

He was an active and enthusiastic member and contributor to the Gundalow Company in Portsmouth, NH, an educational program that works to protect the Piscataqua River’s maritime heritage through education and action.

In his later years Albert hosted a series of popular evenings called “Evenings With The Arts” at The Stageneck Inn and The York Harbor Inn in York Harbor, on subjects ranging from a history of baroque music to in-depth looks at classical ballet, with titles such as “Five Outstanding Ballerinas of The Bolshoi.” He would invite friends and family, give a short speech on the subject and play videos and recordings that he carefully curated.

He also traveled extensively after retiring, making numerous visits to his favorite city Paris, France.

There are no funeral plans at this time due to the Covid pandemic.
