Alfred B. Melendy Obituary

Alfred (Al) Melendy, 96, a lifelong resident of Billerica, passed away peacefully on February 11th in York, Maine, surrounded by his family.

Al was born in 1929 and grew up at Nutting Lake. He attended school in Billerica and joined the Army at age 17, at the end of World War II. Following his discharge, he attended trade school for heating and air conditioning and later started his own sheet metal business, which he operated for many years alongside his sons.

In 1951, he married Eleanor Schaffer, and together they raised their family in a neighborhood near the center of town. Throughout the years, Al enjoyed camping, bowling, skiing, fishing, traveling, cruising, and visiting casinos. He was a dedicated member of the Billerica Lions Club, volunteering in the community and raising funds for vision care, eye research, and in various ways serving those in need.

What mattered most to Al was his family and the many friends whose lives he touched. He is survived by his five children: Frank (Laurie) Melendy, Edith (John) Brigham, Linda Tessman, William Melendy, and Kimberly (Mark) Stevens, along with 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren who all brought him great joy. He was predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Eleanor, in 2014.

Al, Alfie, Uncle Al, Dad, and Grampa will be deeply missed and always remembered.

Donations in Al’s memory may be made to the Billerica Lions Club, P.O. Box 5245, Billerica, MA 01821.

A private graveside service celebrating his life will be held with his family this spring.
