Ann Marie (Sheridan) Clark

Ann Marie (Sheridan) Clark age 92, formerly of Gardner, MA, passed away in her sleep on Sunday July 23, 2023. She was at the Durgin Pines nursing home in Kittery, Maine at the time. She had congestive heart failure and developed pneumonia. She actually died of Vascular Dementia. 

She was the daughter of the late Raymond J. Sheridan and Mary N. Sheridan. She had multiple strokes in April, 2014. As a result she became paralyzed on her left side that she never recovered from. 

She continued to live her life the best  she could, still managing to tell old stories, play bingo, word games, and spread her infectious laugh to everyone. She was born in Concord, MA on May 16, 1931. She grew up in Maynard, MA. She graduated from Maynard High School in 1949.

After graduation she went to work for the New England telephone company at the Maynard office. She started as a switchboard operator. She continued to work for some 40+ years in various positions rising into management at Verizon. She worked at various locations with Gardner, MA being her final location. She moved there in the late 1950’s and stayed there until her stroke in 2014. 

She was married for a few years in the 1950’s to Robert Clark of Acton, MA. She never married again. She continued to enjoy herself. 

Her nieces and nephews were treated as her children and she would spoil them or help as needed. She loved to take the family to lunch. She always paid the check, and would not let anyone else pay. 

Later in her working career she met a man named Bill Birt. He became her life partner. They traveled together to many places. They enjoyed going out dancing and were very good at it. They spent many winters together in St. Petersburg, FL. They loved the restaurants and various sites to visit. 

She would visit her aunt Peg (Sheridan) and uncle Tony Civitarese while there. Ann was very close to them. They would take her to various places when she was a child. She was like their child as they never had a child of their own. Aunt Peg became a life mentor for her. Ann patterned her life after her. She too was a stylish dresser and a generous woman who could be counted on. She was Ann’s idol. 

After Bill passed on in the 2000’s Ann continued her visits with family members. They would go to Foxwoods casino or lunches where she would hand out scratch tickets and pay the check. She also went to the retired Verizon employee functions called the Pioneers where she was with fellow workers she had known for many years. 

Ann is survived by her brother Thomas and wife Deborah Sheridan of York, Maine, their children Mia Hayes and husband Jon and children Drew, Jack, and Carter all from Sudbury, MA. Brooke Sheridan and husband Douglas Thivierge and children Alex and Kris all from Newburyport, MA.

Her brother-in-law Willi Gerlach of Sterling, MA. His children Karin Patenaude and her husband Brian and children Kyle and Brenna all from Rutland, MA. Heidi Grady and husband Timothy and children Dylan, Luke, and Kendall all of Serling, MA. William Gerlach of Dallas, TX.

Her nephew Michael Sheridan and his children Cameron and Ave all of Ashburnham, MA.

Her niece Beverly (Sheridan) Staple and husband Tom of Groton, VT. Their daughter Tracy of Florida. Her nephew John Sheridan of Florida. Her nephew Robert Sheridan of Maine. 

Ann is predeceased by her parents Raymond J. Sr. and Mary N. (Grigas) Sheridan. Her brother Raymond J. Jr. and wife Patricia Sheridan and their children Peggy, Paul and Peter. Her sister Nancy (Sheridan) Gerlach. Her sister Judy (Sheridan) Scaglione and her husband Angelo.

Her former husband Robert Clark and her life partner Bill Birt.

A private service will be held this fall at the family plot at St. Bridget cemetery in Maynard, MA.
