August Joseph "Joe" Spieler II Obituary

August Joseph Spieler II
November 3, 1942 – January 29, 2026

Born and raised in Ohio, August Joseph “Joe” Spieler II was a determined young man with big dreams and a deep sense of adventure. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, he set his sights on New York City, where he earned his CPA license, completed his service in the Marine Forces Reserve, and began a successful career on Wall Street and in the Square Mile. A proud Notre Dame alumnus, Joe was a passionate Fighting Irish fan, a loyalty he carried throughout his life.

Shortly after moving to New York, Joe married Carolyn Cranston, his wife of 39 years. They later settled in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill neighborhood, where they raised their two children, Gusty and Courtney.

Never one to shy away from a leap of faith, Joe moved his family to London to work in financial derivatives, embracing both the professional challenge and the adventure of life abroad. During their 15 years in England, Joe and Carolyn built a life rich in travel and shared curiosity. He found particular joy in frequent trips to The Solent, pursuing his love of sailing.

After returning to New York and following the passing of Carolyn, Joe found love again with Virginia “Ginny” Jodoin. Together, they shared many happy times in Maine and Florida, including their love of golf. Joe and Ginny will be remembered for their Christmas parties and backyard cookouts with neighbors and friends from the York Golf and Tennis Club.

In his final years, Joe found renewed faith through his dedication as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered as a spirited, fun-loving, and enthusiastic adventurer.

Joe is survived by his wife, Ginny, of 15 years; his son, August “Gusty” Joseph Spieler III of Brooklyn; his daughter, Gretchen “Courtney” Spieler of London; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson, all of whom he loved and who were a source of pride. He also held a special place in his heart for Ginny’s sons, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

A celebration of Joe's life will take place the last weekend of June in York, Maine. All are welcome; details to follow.
