Calvin Hosmer III died on March 3, 2025. He was 91 years old. Born in Sharon MA, he attended Norwich University from 1951 - 1955 graduating with a bachelor's degree in English, and was commissioned through ROTC as a 2nd Lt. of Armor, US Army Reserve. He entered active duty with the Army in October 1955, and was commissioned in the Regular Army in 1957.
He married Cynthia B. Banister in York Harbor, Maine in June 1965, Thus began a family adventure that has lasted for 57 years with twenty household moves exploring Europe and numerous places in the USA (and making lifelong friends along the way.) Over a 28-year career he served in Armored Cavalry units in Germany, Korea and Vietnam, commanding at platoon, troop and squadron level. Stateside assignments included Washington, DC in the 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard) and later in the Pentagon, Tactical Officer at West Point, recruiting duty in New York City, test and evaluation of helicopter units in Texas, and as an advisor to the Army Reserve Components in New Jersey and later in New England. He retired from active duty as a Colonel in August 1983. He received 14 major awards and decorations including the Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ silver star.
Upon retirement the Hosmers moved to Durham, NH where they became very active in the community and Cal served in the Red Cross, on the Durham Planning Board and The Retired Officers’ Association. The Hosmers moved to the family home in York, Maine in July 1997, where Cal served as president of the board of trustees of the Old York Historical Society and as a trustee of Trinity Church.
He was pre-deceased by his brother Thomas and his parents Calvin Jr and Marion P. Hosmer. He leaves his wife Cynthia B. Hosmer, a daughter Katherine, a son Christopher and his wife Susan, and four grandchildren: Megan and Candace Hosmer, and David and Elizabeth LaBombard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Calvin’s name may be sent to the Old York Historical Society’s Memorial Endowment Fund.
