Cynthia Ayn (Corson) Douglass

Ogunquit, ME – Cynthia Ayn Douglass, 73, formerly of Rochester, NH passed away peacefully at home with her sons by her side after a brief illness on Friday, December 13, 2019. She lived her life to the fullest, never taking for granted an opportunity to learn something new, read a good book or help a good friend. Born in Rochester, NH on May 12, 1946, daughter of Raymond and Harriet (Worster) Corson and raised in Berwick, ME where Hubbard Road stories of where she would eventually raise her sons, were humorous and plentiful. She married Dr. C.J. Douglass (Doc) where for many years, they enjoyed operating Douglass Animal Hospital, Rochester, together until 1987, when they sold the practice and began their journey of enjoying their overseas travels. Soon after his sudden death in 1997, Cindy moved back to Maine, which was intended to be their retirement spot together, and boldly immersed herself in the community as a widow, never shying away from a challenge. She applied her newly acquired degree to start her career as a writer for the York Independent and York Weekly where she met many storylines that she soon called friends.  She fully enjoyed her next adventures with the Finestkind Cruises and the Town of Ogunquit, turning colleagues into lifetime friends along the way.

She was active in service to every community in which she lived availing herself to helping others, including her many causes that were important to her such as – Maine Wilderness Watershed Trust, Ogunquit Town Library, and Marginal Way Committee among many others.  Family members are fortunate to have her paintings hanging in their homes as a testament to her many talents and love of the land & ocean. She never missed a full moon or a total eclipse and made sure all of her family/friends knew about when they could catch it! She enjoyed baking and cooking and showered many with her love through a fresh jam, hearty soup or her famous homemade English muffins. She made sure to pass down some of those recipes to her grandchildren. We remember fondly an afternoon of teaching neighborhood children how to make homemade applesauce on the eve of Thanksgiving to make their family celebrations even more meaningful.

She leaves behind her sons, David E. Drapeau, Jr. and his wife, Leigh, of Deerfield NH and York, ME and Marc W. Drapeau, of Rochester, NH and Wells, ME, grandchildren Jacqueline R. Drapeau, Exeter, Molly A. Drapeau, Rochester and C.J. Drapeau, Deerfield, NH and close family members such as Linda and Raj Bhattacharya, Laconia, all of whom she was very proud of and loved more than they know. Her committed friends in Rochester were extremely important to her, always staying connected even though the commute was longer and parking at a high premium. Summer in Ogunquit was not her favorite time in the community, as any full time resident can appreciate, but it was the network of great friends in town who reinforced her reason to stay, year after year, following her annual plea to want to move by the 4th of July.  Our family is extremely grateful to all of her friends who made her an important part of their lives on a daily basis.

Our family would be amiss if we did not give thanks to the fine folks at Southern Maine Hospice for their support during this difficult time. We wish to acknowledge friends such as Mary Campbell of Wentworth Douglass Hospital and Mari O’Neil, Wells, who made this journey more comfortable for her, providing daily support, guidance and most importantly companionship.

Friends and family will gather at the Ogunquit Baptist Church, 157 Shore Rd., Ogunquit, ME on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 11:00am for a Memorial service on her behalf with a reception immediately to follow.
