Deborah Sue Fernald, age 67, passed away peacefully at her home in York, ME on June 27th.
Born on September 30, 1957, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, Debbie was the beloved daughter of the late Arthur E. Fernald and the late Jean Booth Fernald. She grew up in West Newbury, MA, and graduated from Pentucket High School in 1975. Debbie went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy from Ithaca College in 1979, followed by a Master of Science in Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 1988.
A longtime resident of York, Debbie built both a career and a community life rooted in compassion, service, and connection. As a licensed physical therapist, she dedicated decades to helping others heal and thrive—working at York Hospital, Post Road Physical Therapy, Home Health Visiting Nurses of Southern Maine, and for over 30 years with Marsh Brook Rehabilitation Services. In retirement, she pursued a sewing venture with her sister Jill, selling her goods at craft fairs to benefit the York Beach Union Congregational Church. Whether in her professional life or personal relationships, Debbie’s generosity and caring touched all who knew her.
Debbie’s life was one of quiet and selfless faith and service. A devoted member of the church, she served in many capacities over the years—from youth group director in her younger days to tireless baker and food pantry shopper in more recent ones, when health challenges made it harder to attend services in person. Baking had long been a joy of hers (to the delight of her colleagues), but in retirement she embraced it nearly full-time, often for the benefit of her church community. Debbie formed lasting friendships wherever she went—through work, church, and in her neighborhood—and she valued those relationships deeply.
Debbie was highly devoted to her family. She was the keeper of family history and a center for family gatherings. Her home was always open to family, be it for holiday gatherings, baby showers, or an extended stay in Maine. It is impossible to overstate the deep and meaningful role she played in the lives of her eight nieces and nephews—and, in time, their spouses and children as well. She never missed a birthday, a ball game, or a chance to show up when it mattered. Each of them carries many cherished memories: the one-on-one excursions and trips she planned just for them, Thanksgivings spent piled into the bonus room over her garage, word game battles, and phone calls just to discuss the day. She was also an avid reader and delighted in sharing her favorite childhood books with the younger generation. And as a lifelong Red Sox fan, Debbie passed on her love for the team through games at Fenway Park and spirited group texts about the latest scores.
Debbie is survived by her siblings Bruce Fernald (Anna), Scott Fernald (Denise), and Jill Godin (Rock Dower, and the late David K Godin). She is also survived by her eight nieces and nephews, their spouses, and their 16 children.
