Domingos Gomes, 91, of York, Maine, loving husband of 61 years to Prazeres Gomes, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2024, surrounded by family.
Domingos was born in Soutelinho do Mezio, Portugal, on April 8, 1933, the son of Manuel and Josefina Souza Gomes. He immigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when he was 18 where he held various occupations including driving buses and taxis, got married and started a family. Later, he and his family immigrated to the United States where he lived for over 50 years. They settled in Wallingford, CT where he worked as an assembler until retiring. More recently, ten years ago, he moved to York, Maine to be closer to family.
Domingos was a devoted catholic and attendant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford, CT, and St. Christopher’s Church and Star of the Sea Church in York, Maine. He enjoyed walking, gardening, reading and watching soccer, especially cheering for his favorite team Benfica and the Portugal national team. Most of all he cherished family, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed gathering with friends and family whenever he could.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Celio Gomes and his wife, Jeannine, Edson Gomes and his wife, Amy, and his brother, Agostinho Gomes of Portugal, as well as his grandchildren, Gabriela, Jeremy, Jordan and Abigail, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Fernandina Mesquita, Maria Gomes, Jose Gomes and Antonio Gomes.
His family will receive family and friends at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd, York on Monday July 15 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Following, there will be a funeral mass at St. Christopher’s Church, 4 Barrell Ln, York at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at First Parish Cemetery, in York, ME.
