Doris Lydia Berkenfeld, 95, of York, Maine, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025.
Doris was born on March 3, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey to Adele and Ben Berkenfeld. After graduating from Weequahic High School, she married at the age of 18, settling in northern New Jersey to raise her three daughters. For much of her adult life, she worked as a legal secretary, commuting to New York City for the final ten years of her professional career. She delighted in the buzz of the big city, frequenting the opera and introducing her first born granddaughter to Broadway.
In her early retirement, Doris embraced travel- jetting off to Ireland, Italy, France, the Caribbean, and Israel. In her later years, she settled in York, Maine, close to the ocean, which brought her so much joy. Doris also loved dogs, ice-cream, jigsaw puzzles, and babies! She was famously content to sit for hours with a sleeping infant on her chest.
Doris will be remembered as a true “Jersey girl”, with a feisty exterior, yet warm and vulnerable heart. She was deeply devoted to her family- especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her three daughters, Janet Melzer of Jerusalem, Israel, Lisa Goulet of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Marion Remignanti of Cape Neddick, Maine. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Doris’ life will be held in the spring of 2026, at a gathering near the ocean.
