George W. Merritt, Sr. – “a life well-lived”
Wells, Maine – George W. Merritt, Sr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, March 11, 2025, from natural causes at his home in Wells, Maine, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Martha (McHale) Merritt of Wells, Maine.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, June 3, 1935, a son of the late William A. and Theresa V. (Brick) Merritt. He attended St. Margarets School and then Keith Academy both in Lowell. He graduated from Burdett College in Boston, Massachusetts before entering the U.S. Navy in 1955. George proudly served his country aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Antietam (CVS-36) both in the United States and abroad.
George held the position of Superintendent of both St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell, Massachusetts and St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury, Massachusetts and it was his life’s work. He touched countless people with his compassion, generosity, and infectious sense of humor. Following his retirement, George and Martha relocated permanently to the southern coast of Maine where they enjoyed joyous holidays and endless summers by the beach surrounded by the love and laughter of family and friends.
George is survived by his wife, Martha, and their four children. His daughters, Ellen Nixon and her husband Eric of Wells, Maine; Kate Torrey and her husband David of Amherst, Massachusetts; Paula Adams and her husband William of Ludlow, Massachusetts; and his son, George W. Merritt, Jr. and his wife Monica of Kennebunk, Maine. His treasured grandchildren, Alex Torrey of Chicago, Illinois; Julia Campo and her husband Jeremy of Bristol, Rhode Island; Carolina Merritt of Lowell, Massachusetts; and his namesake George W. Merritt III of Kennebunk, Maine.
George is also survived by his sister, Margaret Loucraft of Lowell, Massachusetts, as well as nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, William F. Merritt, and his sister, Barbara V. Torpey, all of Lowell, Massachusetts.
There will be no service held. Internment at Ocean View Cemetery of Wells, Maine in the spring.
