Jayne Tillotson Obituary

YORK BEACH, Maine — Jayne H. Tillotson, 88, of Freeman Street, died peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2023, in Kittery Estates in Kittery, Maine.

She was born May 5, 1934, in Jersey City, NJ, a daughter of the late M. David and Esther (Crockett) Haynes.

Jayne grew up in Westfield, NJ, but she spent every summer at the family home in the “Bay Haven” area of Cape Neddick. She attended Maryland College for Women in Lutherville, MD and Wheelock College in Boston, MA. After marrying her husband, A.Robert Tillotson, Jayne joined him in Tachikawa, Japan, where he was stationed after the Korean War as a first lieutenant and pilot for the Air Force. Her husband then flew for United Airlines and they lived in Topsfield, MA, Tinton Falls, NJ and Dover Point, NH.

Over the years, Jayne pursued a number of interests. She was a lifelong Red Sox fan, and would often recount stories of her days at Wheelock where she would “skip” class to go to Fenway Park to watch Ted Williams play.  Jayne talked about the best days of her life which included marrying her husband, the birth of her two children, and the day she met Ted Williams.  Upon her husband’s retirement, Jayne spent many happy winters in Pine Island, FL, attending Sox Spring Training games, riding her bike, and enjoying visits from her children and grandchildren. Jayne loved to travel, visiting places such as Bermuda, Alaska, and the Canadian Maritimes and made two memorable cross country trips in “the camper.” In addition, Jayne was an avid bridge player and could be found in the summer playing with friends on her front porch. She was also very involved with the Union Congregational Church.  Prior to moving to Maine in the late 1970s, she was active in the Reformed Church in Tinton Falls, NJ, where she and her husband were the youth fellowship leaders; she kept in lifelong contact with many of the young people whose lives she touched. Lastly, above all else, Jayne loved spending time with her family, including her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the love of her life, her husband, Bob.

With warmth and a great sense of humor, Jayne made friends wherever she went.  She loved to laugh!

Jayne is survived by a son, Robert C. Tillotson and his wife, Lynn Lamontagne, of Arundel; a daughter, Debi Tillotson Welling and her husband, Mark, of Ipswich, Massachusetts; five grandchildren, Robbie Tillotson and wife Angela of Portland, Devon Havey and husband Kevin of Arundel, David Tillotson of Arundel, Luke Welling of Portland, and Joshua Welling of Ipswich, Massachusetts; and four great-grandchildren, Eva, Kosta, Bradley and Julian. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, A. Robert Tillotson and a sister, Sally H. Smith.
