YORK, Maine – Jean Donnell Thyng of York, Maine died January 14th peacefully at home .

She was born December 7th , 1933 in Portland and is the daughter of Florence Donnell of York. Her grandfather Herbert Edward Donnell was a caring and doting character in her life who looked out for Jean. She grew up in York and graduated from York High School where she enjoyed her teachers, coaches and basketball, winning the State of Maine schoolgirl foul shooting contest in 1950. She often spoke fondly of coach Lapham who she kept up with for many years. She married her high school sweetheart Dick Thyng in 1952 and went on to travel with him to Boston where she graduated from stenography school, New Jersey while he was in the Army and on to Nebraska for Dick’s construction work.

They returned to the Boston area in 1957 where she raised her three sons and in her spare time helped with the administrative aspects of running her husband’s successful construction consulting business. For years she traveled between York and Delray Beach Florida where she enjoyed an active social life, line-dancing and the arts community.

She is survived by her sons Richard Jr. of York and Scott Thyng of Hobe Sound, FL.; her daughters-in-law Dana Thyng and Donna Ceriani, her grandchildren Desiree Guy of Orlando, FL, Chantel Thyng of Lake Worth FL and Alana Thyng of New York City as well as great grandchildren Landon, Tanner, Luke and Ava Guy of Orlando. She was predeceased by her son David and her husband Dick.

Jean’s family feels deep gratitude to her primary caregivers Gina Russell, Deb Gray and Tara Bolduc who made her feel like a queen and granted her wish for a peaceful passing at home.

She is remembered as the cat whisperer with a sassy sense of humor who treasured animals. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local ASPCA.
