Jean C. Lincoln Obituary

Jean Cutler Lincoln, born in Boston, MA to Alice Kimball Martin and raised by Alice and William Curry Martin, passed away on November 2, 2025.

She is preceded by her first husband, and father to her children, Claude McGinnis, and her second husband, David Lincoln.

She is survived by her two sisters, Mary Malone of Memphis, TN and Annie Garda of Brazil.

And four children, Kim McGinnis, and Dennis Naranche, and Kim’s children: Hannah, Len, and Kellen, Bill McGinnis, and his children: Billy, Luca, and Lavee. Becky King, and John and their children John and Augusta. Cary Lemelin, and Steve, and her children Bayne and Claire.

At age 16, Jean went to The University of Michigan graduating with a BA in English. Then, rather than pursuing a scholarship in social work, she decided to follow her friends to NYC where “they were having such a good time”, and worked at MacMillan Publishing Co. At UofM, she first fell in love with art when she took a fine arts course under Professor Marvin Eisenberg. That led to being a docent at the High Museum in Atlanta where she raised her four amazing children.

The Lincolns first met when David saw Jean in the office of the Atlanta ophthalmologist where she worked and asked to meet her. He eventually got into refurbishing a sailboat which then led to the grand idea of “Circumnavigating North America” aboard The Serenity beginning in Vancouver and ending in Nova Scotia after 18 months at sea.

After settling in York, she and David became active town council members and community volunteers as well as world travelers, hikers, campers, fly fisherpeople, bridge players and golfers. Jean immersed herself in pottery and painting and became an active volunteer and exhibitor at the York Art Association. Her volunteer board memberships also included Habitat for Humanity, Mainspring, York Library, York Hospital, St John’s Episcopal Church Portsmouth, Haystack School and the Kittery Art Association.

Her love of art continued as she became an avid potter. She would rhapsodize about hands embracing clay at the wheel, learning the art of “centering - herself and her material” and finally discovering that a perfectly centered pot was not always the most beautiful.

She would state, “In life, as in art, imperfections make people more interesting, more beautiful”.

A small memorial service will be held at Sentry Hill, York, ME on Thursday, November 6 from 3 to 5 p.m.
