John Bevan Howe, 82, passed away on August 8, 2025, in York, Maine, surrounded by his family and the most amazing caregivers.
John Howe was known by many names: the Mayor of York, Johnny Jam, Coach Howe, or simply Howe. He lived a life marked by dedication, humor, and deep connections with those around him. Wherever he went, he spread joy, laughter, and love.
Born on April 5, 1943, in Waltham, Massachusetts, John was the son of Bevan and Dene Howe. He was raised in Sudbury, Massachusetts, with his older brother, Steve, and was predeceased by his sister, Virginia.
He graduated from Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts, where he participated in wrestling, soccer, and hockey. He then attended the University of Vermont, where he majored in English—and skiing—and was a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. His time there was filled with shenanigans and pranks that led to lifelong friendships.
Following his studies, John was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968 with the 9th Infantry Division—a chapter of his life that shaped his resilience and deepened his sense of duty. After returning home, he married the love of his life, Debbie Condon of Ludlow, Massachusetts, in 1971. They spent 54 wonderful years together.
John worked for ConAgra Foods as a sales representative in West Springfield, Massachusetts, before being promoted to Territory Manager and moving to New Jersey. In 1986, he transferred to York, Maine, returning to the New England roots he loved. Over his 38-year career in the food industry, John proved he could sell anything. In retirement, he worked part-time at Stonewall Kitchen in York—a role he thoroughly enjoyed.
John taught Sunday school with his wife for over 20 years and volunteered at Table of Plenty and End 68 Hours of Hunger. He loved sports and coached his children’s soccer, softball, and basketball teams. He also pursued his passion for golf and played regularly with a cherished foursome.
Beyond work and service, John was known for his infectious sense of humor and love for entertaining. Whether through elaborate pranks or spontaneous antics, he brought joy and laughter to countless gatherings. His presence lit up every room he entered, leaving lasting memories for all who knew him.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie; his daughters, Kate Howe of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Lindsay Noyes and son-in-law David Noyes of Swanville, Maine; and his son, Timothy Howe, and daughter-in-law Tori Howe of South Portland, Maine. He was a proud grandfather to June B. Noyes, Bevan P. Noyes, and Grace S. Howe. He is also survived by his brother, Stephen Howe, and wife Lorraine of Franklin, Massachusetts; sister-in-law Pam Budlong of Wilbraham, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews. His family was the center of his life, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and happiness. He also leaves behind countless dear friends.
A man of many stories and even more smiles, John Bevan Howe will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing.
