John J. Murphy, 91, of York Maine passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, May 18, 2026. Born on December 5,1934 and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he was the son of Thomas and Helen Murphy, brother to Arlene Burgess and her husband, Albert. He attended Boston College as a golf scholar and graduated class of 1955 and received advanced degrees from MIT executive programs. He served his country in the US Army Security and Army Intelligence. John was a highly respected global executive in the defense and technology industries for over 35 years. His favorite job, however, was in retirement, working with his son as he built a landscaping business and spending time with his grandchildren. John was an avid golfer and member of the York Golf and Tennis club for over 40 years. He is best known enjoying a round of golf with his friends, teaching his children and grandchildren the art of the sport, shooting 80 at the age of 84 as well as for his support of youth golf programs.
John will be most remembered for his endless love and devotion to his wife of 68 years, four children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was extraordinarily proud of his family and enjoyed frequent calls with his children and grandchildren to hear about their activities. To his family, he was everything – full of hope and wisdom. No matter the topic, he was a teacher, sounding board, true compass, and trusted advisor who could be counted on for unwavering support and guidance even into his last days.
John is survived by his wife, Marcia, and children, Judy Yorke and husband Tom; Cynthia Franks and husband David; Deborah Lawson and husband Rich Cella; Tom Murphy and wife Diane; his grandchildren; Michael Lawson and wife Christine; Johnathan Lawson, Thomas Yorke and wife Caroline; Jennifer Franks, Matthew Franks and fiancé Melissa; and his great grandchildren Joseph and Henry Lawson.
Funeral services will be held at St. Christopher's Catholic Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, Maine, on June 1 at 11 AM. Funeral arrangements provided by Lucas & Eaton in York. Memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research Hospital.
