John R. (Pete) Lucas, of South Berwick, Maine, passed away January 9, 2021 peacefully at home with his loving family at his side. He was born in Lewiston, Maine on April 3, 1944, the oldest son of John L. and Madeline R. (Elcik) Lucas.
He is survived by Lorraine his beautiful and devoted wife of 57 years, two daughters Cynthia Lucas Wolcott of Dover, NH and Laurie Lucas of Malta, NY, grandson’s Alexander Wolcott of Reston, VA and Andrew Wolcott of Dover, NH.
He is also survived by his many siblings; sister Constance Akerley and husband Russell, brother Rodney Lucas and wife Rosemary, sister Christine Currier and husband Bryant, sister Janet Welch and husband James, brother L. Michael Lucas, sister Sherilynn Lucas and partner Dave Dahlen, brother Ronald Lucas (predeceased) and his wife Janis as well as many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Pete.
He had several careers spanning from Purchaser at National Sea Products to builder to painter. By far his favorite was co-proprietor of Lucas Sunoco in North Berwick, Maine where he partnered with his brother Mike for several years. He was never more exhausted and never happier than when he was running a business alongside his brother.
He loved and enjoyed his grandson’s immensely and was a guiding force in shaping them into the fine young men they are today. He shared a love of fishing with Alexander. They fished locally in Maine and New Hampshire and also shared the trip of a lifetime to Alaska. He shared a love of sports with Andrew and spent many hours sitting in the bleachers watching him play baseball, including a memorable trip to Cooperstown.
He understood the importance of family, a value instilled in him by his extraordinary parents, John and Maddy. He was both a protector and a giver. He watched over his wife and daughters with the compassion of a saint and the ferocity of a lion. He wanted and needed little for himself but never failed to provide for his family. He wanted everything for his girls and was proud of them both. Not for what they have achieved but for who they have become.
Most of all, he was loved by all who knew him. There was nothing unlikable about Pete. He possessed the rare quality to listen, understand, and accept people for who they are and never spoke an unkind word about anyone. He lived his life the way he wanted to and did things his way. It served him well. If only his quit wit and genuine, heart felt kindness towards all could be replicated….oh what a wonderful world this would be. His beautiful soul is in heaven, and his memory in all our hearts.
Pete’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Wentworth Hospice in Somersworth, NH. He had many angels caring for him over the last 6 months. Rene, Bethany, Holly, Jennifer, Donna, Matte, Karen, Emily, Jean, Brian, Grace, Krista, and Chris, there are not enough words to express our thanks. This was not a journey we could have navigated without each and every one of you. Your knowledge, expertise, empathy, and kindness will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held privately. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date when everyone can gather together and all will be welcome. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine is assisting with arrangements. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
