Kathleen E. Hofer, 80, died Monday, February 16, 2026, at her home in York, Maine.
She was born in Jacksonville Florida, the daughter of Earl and Polly (Lewis) Eichin of Jaffrey, New Hampshire.
She lived in York, ME for the past 18 years, a former resident of Southborough, Massachusetts and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Hofer graduated from Cushing Academy and Mount Vernon College, class of 1966. Early in her career, she worked for the State Department and Harvard University.
In 1969, she moved to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, where she met John Hofer. They married and remained in the Virgin Islands for the next 3 years before moving back to the States to give birth to her eldest son. Relocating to Southboro, she and John raised their three boys, became active members of the local community and co-founded the Boston Resume Writers. She would later go on to lead an executive search group and run an HR department with Boston Children's Hospital. Upon retirement, Mrs. Hofer volunteered for the Red Cross, deploying to disaster sites to aid in local community recovery efforts multiple times each year. When her health no longer permitted these activities, she volunteered remotely to be of service.
Moving to York, ME enabled Mrs. Hofer the opportunity to renovate her home, refurbish the surrounding gardens and become the proud owner of Sam, a white Lhasa Apso, which she rescued from his former abusive owners. They were inseparable for the rest of Sam's lifetime, taking walks to the beach or sharing a warm blanket next to the fire to combat Maine winters.
She leaves behind three sons and daughters-in-law, C. J. Montgomery Hofer III and Jill Hofer of Needham, MA, Nicholas A. R. Hofer and Carin Hofer of Needham, MA, and Christian M. R. Hofer and Katherine K. Hofer of Charlotte, NC.; and eight grandchildren, Abigail, Olivia, Charlie, Sienna, James, George, Greenwood and John. She was predeceased by her husband, C. John M. Hofer, Jr. of Southboro, MA and her brother, Earl Eichin, Jr. of New Orleans, LA.
The family will hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Red Cross.
