Kenneth E. Barrett Obituary

Kittery Point, Maine – Kenneth E. Barrett passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at his
home in Kittery Point surrounded by family members who loved him. Born October 30, 1930 in
Westwood, New Jersey, he was the son of Mildred (Bogert) and Lawrence Barrett. Ken was raised in
Westwood along with his older sister and younger brother.

Ken attended Westwood High School, and in the summer of 1949, he entered what he referred to as
“the greatest college in our country,” the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London,
Connecticut. During his second year as a cadet at the Academy Ken met the love of his life, Evelyn
Paisley Steele, who was then a student at Connecticut College, also in New London. Ken and Eve were
married in West Hartford, CT, on October 10, 1953, following his graduation from the Academy and
commissioning as an Ensign in the United States Coast Guard.

Following three years of service to our country, Ken resigned his commission from the Coast Guard,
achieving the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He then embarked on a thirty-five year career in industry,
working in a variety of executive positions for the Terry Steam Turbine Company, Studebaker-
Worthington, and the Bird Machine Company. Together Ken and Eve had five children and moved
frequently for Ken’s career. Ken’s work involved frequent international travel, which he thoroughly
enjoyed. For a time, the couple lived with their youngest daughter in Campinas, Brazil where they
learned to speak Portuguese.

After settling in Kittery Point in 1988, Ken and Eve were both active in their community. Ken served
on the vestry at St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor, where he and Eve were active
parishioners for many years. Using his investment management skills, Ken also served on the Trustees of
Diocesan Funds for the Episcopal Diocese of Maine and on the Board of Trustees for the Strawberry
Banke Museum in Portsmouth, NH. Together with Eve, he also cofounded the Evelyn S. and K.E. Barrett
Foundation for the benefit of children in need.

Shaped in part by his time in the Coast Guard, Ken had a great love for sailing and the ocean and owned
a variety of sailboats throughout his life. After settling in Kittery Point, Ken and Eve enjoyed many
summers cruising downeast along the coast of Maine.

Ken in survived by his sister Jean Hansen; his brother Bruce and wife Zelma; his children Katherine
Barrett Zywan and husband Daniel, Jeffrey and wife Wendy, Peter and wife Marlene, and Faith; as well
as his grandchildren Stephanie Barrett (Jacob Gdovin), Emily Barrett (Taylor Wilson), Jessica and
husband George Minott, and Nick Zywan. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn and their daughter
Deborah Evelyn.

Ken’s family would like to thank the staff of Extended Family for the many years of compassionate care
and support that they provided to him.

The service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 4, 2022 and will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church, 407 York St., York Harbor, ME, with interment to take place immediately following the service in the Memorial Garden at St. George's.
