Forever a picture of strength and with a will to survive for her family, Laurie Ann Manter Donnellan of York, ME entered eternal rest on April 21, 2021 in Boston, MA after a brave, hard-fought battle.
Laurie was born on August 18, 1952 in Birmingham, AL to Edwin and Elizabeth Manter (Lewis). A graduate of the Lexington High School class of 1970, Laurie attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in Animal Husbandry in 1972. After graduation, Laurie worked for Charles River Laboratories in Wilmington, MA for a year before moving on to the Mann Veterinary Clinic in Wells, ME. She then worked with the York Sewer District for a few years while also attending night school at Southern New Hampshire University in pursuit of a degree in Information Technology. For the next 40 years, she would lead her team at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in myriad ways before retiring in 2016 as Senior Project Manager.
Known for her keen green thumb, Laurie spent much of her free time beautifying her garden at the family’s home in York Harbor. She had such a knack for identifying and caring for her flowers and plants, always maintaining an impeccable floral landscape around her home.
Energized by physical fitness, health and wellness, Laurie often took fitness classes with her exercise crew. She appreciated running races with her sister Nancy, and ever the competitor, was always up for a monthly miles running competition against the family. Especially since she typically won!
An avid traveler, Laurie enjoyed worldwide adventures with her husband Paul. Together they’ve added 13 stamps to their passports. With their sons Justin and Corey, and extended family, they’ve spent annual vacations at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida for the last four decades.
Of all the roles Laurie played over her lifetime, perhaps the one for which she was best suited was that of a grandmother. Known as Gammie to her grandson Leo, 4 and granddaughter Selena, 2, Laurie’s whole face lit up by the mere mention of these “wee people” as she called them. She loved to take them to Cape Neddick to splash in the water or play in the sand, to the playground at Short Sands Beach, and to help them plant their own little garden. During the winter months, Gammie & Pepe escaped the Maine cold as “snow birds” in Florida, spending much of their time with Leo and Selena: playing outside on their swing set, walking the neighborhood in search of the local gator that they dubbed “Wally,” visiting manatees at Blue Springs. Laurie renewed her former knitting hobby to create blankets, sweaters, and toys for the children. She also helped foster their creativity by completing homemade crafts together and encouraging artistic, imaginative play whenever possible.
Laurie was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Elizabeth, and her brother Edwin “Ned” Lewis Manter, of Falmouth, MA. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Paul; son Paul Justin Donnellan and his wife Mindy of Nashville, TN; son Corey James Donnellan, his wife Emily, and their children Leo and Selena of Davenport, FL; brother Gary Manter, his wife Cheryl Elkins and their children Matthew and Mariah of Hamilton, MA; sister Nancy Botte and her husband Ernest of Nottingham, NH; as well as four brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, and three nieces.
The family will hold a private service for Laurie in the First Parish Cemetery, York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA
