Lealand Gerald Winn

Lealand Gerald “Gerry” Winn passed away at age 91 on January 17, 2021 in York, Maine.  He was born in Utica, NY on July 12, 1929 to Lealand and Cecelia Winn. 

Gerry grew up in Ravena, NY and graduated from Syracuse University in 1951.  He went on to earn his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.  He served his country in the US Air Force for 2 years, stationed in Savannah, GA.  After discharge, he moved to Delmar, NY to set up a dental practice where he served the community as a family dentist for 45 years, retiring in 1999.

On September 12, 1953, he was united in marriage to Virginia Gilbert.  They raised 4 children and were happily married for over 67 years.  Together, they loved and served the Lord in several churches and ministries.  Their home was always open and filled with family and friends.  Gerry loved getting to know people and was a spiritual mentor to many.  No matter the occasion or topic, he always had a quote or a joke or a story to share.

Gerry vacationed in York, Maine with his family from boyhood on.  He loved the ocean, fishing on the rocks by the Nubble lighthouse, boating, and enjoying the great local seafood.  It was a dream come true when he and Virginia moved to York in 2015. 

Gerry was well-known for his many talents and hobbies.  He had a massive model train collection which he had started at age 7.  He loved all types of games and sports.  He coached softball for nearly 50 years, was always ready for a game of horseshoes or bocce, often worked on crossword puzzles or sudokus, and played poker, bridge, or pinochle at every opportunity.  He was the family handy-man, able to fix most anything with whatever he had on hand.  He loved to organize things and meticulously kept his books by hand and to the penny.  His blueberry pancakes were ‘world famous’ and loved by all.

Those left to cherish his memory are his beautiful and devoted wife, Virginia; his children Mark (Karen) Winn of York, ME; Virginia Lee Winn of Cohoes, NY; Bruce (Michele) Winn of Berne, NY; and Gary (Amy) Winn of Arundel, Maine; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister Ellen (Bob) Barker of Delmar, NY, 4 nephews, a niece, and a host of extended and dear family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date when everyone can gather, and all will be welcome.
