Mae "Jean" Hapgood Obituary

York, Maine-Mae Eugenia "Jean" Hapgood, 91 died peacefully at Avita of Wells on November 13, 2021. She was born on April 1, 1930 to Harlan and Pearl Webster in Fitchburg, MA.  She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1948.

Jean met, fell in love with and married Robert Hapgood in 1952.  They settled in Leominster, MA and had three children, Brien, Sandra and Wayne.  Jean lost her husband in 1960.  Despite this, she did an amazing job raising her children.  She was an incredibly loving, nurturing and supportive parent, ensuring that her children had many positive experiences such as spending summers at York Beach and winter weekends skiing the White Mountains.

Jean’s early work experience was primarily secretarial, at first working at the family car dealership, Hapgood Motors, in Leominster and later Stevens Business College and Leominster High School.  As her children grew she purposely chose employment in school systems to ensure her schedule would match theirs.  In 1975 she left the school system to join a startup computer company named Digital Equipment Corporation. At Digital she began to reach her true professional potential, starting in the Human Resources Department and becoming a Business Systems Analyst by the time of her retirement.

In retirement she enjoyed her home, her family, doted on her grandchildren and enjoyed the company of her gentleman friend Bill Thomson of York, Maine.  Jean and Bill enjoyed each other’s company and spent a great deal of time traveling throughout New England.

Jean had a fantastic sense of humor and a razor sharp wit.  She was funny, even- keeled and wise.  She kept her world in perspective.  No matter the trials and tribulations she was forced to endure, she constantly maintained a positive outlook on life.  Her joys were her family, particularly her grandchildren, skiing, knitting and sewing.  As a seamstress her skill was so adept that she hand made all her Bridesmaid gowns for her wedding.  Her love for skiing was such that she continued to head to the mountains until she was eighty.  That gave her grandkids the opportunity to ski with grandma and learn the sport from a master.

Anyone who knew Jean knows how incredibly loving and selfless she was.  She made everyone around her feel special, letting you know that you were loved on a daily basis.   She will be greatly missed by many.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Hapgood and his wife Debra of Kennebunk; three grandchildren including Winona Hapgood of Medford, Wisconsin: Lauren Sala and her husband Salvatore of Kittery Maine; Spencer Hapgood, a Marine Lance Corporal stationed in Hawaii; her son-in-law Jason Phillips of Leominster, MA and her sister Helen Worrels of Chula Vista, California.  Jean is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son Brien and daughter Sandra Hapgood-Phillips. Also her siblings Spencer Webster, Kenneth Webster, James Webster, Miriam Erickson, Pricilla Clough, Harlan Webster, Jr, and June Sipe.
