Marjerie Hastings, age 94, of York, Maine, passed away on October 23, 2023. She was the daughter of the late George and Alberta Hastings of Grantham, NH. Born on June 25, 1929, Marjerie was raised on a large farm in Grantham, one of six children. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four of her siblings: Willena Spooner of Woodstock, Vermont; Wilfred Hastings of Grantham, NH; Wilma Bean of Springfield, NH; and Ronald Hastings of Grantham, NH.
Marjerie is survived by her brother, Paul Hastings, of Lebanon, NH; her sons, Wayne Boardman and his wife Mary Lynne of York; Bruce Boardman and his wife Karen of Cape Neddick; and her daughter, Nancy Bither and her husband Greg of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. She is also survived by a grandson, Eric, of Portland, Oregon; a granddaughter, Lani Silversides and her husband Steve of York; and a granddaughter, Annie Edminster and her husband Matt of Newfields, NH. Additionally, she leaves behind five great-granddaughters, Mena Boardman; Emma and Grace Silversides; and Clara and Maeve Edminster, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Marjerie graduated from Lebanon High School and attended the University of New Hampshire before marrying James Boardman of York Beach in 1948. An accomplished seamstress, Marjerie recognized the absence of fabric shops in the local area, leading her to open a small fabric shop in her home, which she operated until all three children were in school. Subsequently, she worked as a bookkeeper at Eldredge Hardware in Cape Neddick for a few years before joining the Navy Command at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Later, following her divorce, she worked at Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC. After some years, she returned to the area and eventually became the Administrative Officer of the Naval Medical Clinic at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until her retirement in 1998.
Apart from her pride in her family and their many accomplishments, Marjerie had a deep passion for traveling the world, golfing, and flying. Over the years, she explored over 40 countries across the globe, finding each one thoroughly fascinating. In her 40s, she decided to take golf lessons at York Golf Club and went on to win two Maine State Senior Women's Golf Tournaments in 1983 and 1986. Inspired by her two brothers who served in the U.S. Air Force, Marjerie took private pilot flying lessons and obtained her private pilot's license at the age of 50. She was delighted that all three of her children and several daring friends were brave enough to soar the skies with her.
Marjerie Hastings will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, unwavering dedication to her family, and her many accomplishments throughout her remarkable life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In accordance with Marjerie's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service or visiting hours. At a later date, her family and close friends will gather for a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the York Community Service Association.
