Mary Gemmell Obituary

Mary Benton Gemmell, died peacefully in her sleep in Kissimmee, FL on June 23, 2024 surrounded by family.  She was born in Worcester, MA on June 5, 1928 to Seth and Clare (Brennan) Benton.  Mary was a graduate of Connecticut College in New London, CT.  Mary and her husband Larry were wed on October 20, 1951 and were married for over 63 years.  Mary and Larry were long time visitors to the York, ME area and then made it their residence in 1999. 

She loved traveling, was a devoted reader, dedicated family member and loved history both real and fictional.  She had a long career in banking, retiring as the head of the retirement practice for Boston Federal Savings Bank. 

Mary is survived by her children, Susan Gemmell-Quemere and her husband Andre, William Gemmell and his wife Diane, James Gemmell, and son in law Thomas Phillips; by her grandchildren, Christopher Gemmell, Jessica Maffetore, Matthew Gemmell, Allison Quemere, Andrew Quemere, Amy Phillips; seven great-grandchildren and by her sister Marge Gaudreau.  She is predeceased by her husband James L. Gemmell, daughter Anne Phillips, and sister Clare Benton Morin.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 1st at 11:00AM at St. Christopher's Church, 4 Barrell Ln. York, ME. Burial will be in the First Parish Cemetery. The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the York Food Pantry.  Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York, Maine is directing arrangements.
