Mary Ellen (nee Kelleher) DeVirgilio went home to Our Lord on December 13th. She was 69 years old. Mary’s greatest joy was being a mom to her sons, Joseph from New York, Thomas and his partner Cheyenne from Kentucky, and her grandson TJ. Mary leaves behind her siblings, Margaret Kelleher (Hilo Hawaii), Karen Mason and her husband George (York Beach), Frank Kelleher (Cape Neddick) and his partner Patricia Hooley, and Jennifer Kelleher (Berwick). She also leaves behind her nephews, Dylan, Francis, Sam, Stuart and Timothy and several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her nephew Forrest and her parents Frank Kelleher, his wife Janice and her mom, Angela Choate.
Mary dedicated her life to providing care to others, beginning in her teen years as a candy striper and then continuing as an LPN licensed in both Maine and New Hampshire, ending only with her retirement from Sentry Hill this past May, a career which spanned more than 50 years. Known affectionately to those closest to her as Mae Mae, Mary will forever be remembered for her compassion and concern for others, an often sly wit at holiday gatherings with her family and the great joy she took in traveling overseas with her sisters. Mary greatly enjoyed reading, walking the seacoast's beaches, hiking, going to museums, movies and the theater, especially when in the company of her closest friends Debbie DiLando, Liz Englehart, and Hazel Hollenbeck.
Rest in Peace Mary. Your kindness, generosity and love will live forever in the hearts of those who knew you and loved you. Your gentle and beautiful spirit continues to shine through all around us. You will be missed.
A memorial service and celebration of Mary’s life is planned for Spring, 2025.
