York, Maine- Michael P. Hildreth, 80, passed away on Wednesday, March 19th, 2025, in Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home in Scarborough with his family by his side. He was born February 6th, 1945, in York, Maine, son of the late Willett P. Hildreth (2001) and Mildred R. (Fernald) Smith (2013).
Michael grew up in the small seaside town of Ogunquit, Maine. He loved sharing memories from his younger years, most notably the ones of sneaking out of the Ogunquit Village School House by shimmying down the flagpole and grabbing a coke at the local drugstore. He also talked of playing football for Wells High School and causing mischief with his closest friends. Michael was a seasonal police officer for the Ogunquit Police Department and a member of the Ogunquit Fire Department. Michael worked as a nuclear pipefitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. One of his greatest accomplishments was working on the USS Dolphin (AGSS-555), and he would proudly talk of how it was the deepest diving submarine in U.S. history. Michael was a member of The American Legion Frank E. Booma Post #6 In Portsmouth and the York Maine Elks Lodge #2788. He also enjoyed many years of playing tennis at The Works Athletic Club in Dover, NH and Friday nights at the Union Bluff, discussing sports lines with his many friends and acquaintances. He loved playing cards at many of the local casinos and was a proud member of the breakfast bar crew at Norma’s Restaurant, where he could be found most every morning with his friends and later grabbing a casino carpool ride. Michael also loved spending time with his golden retriever Annie and every Wednesday with his grandchildren. They will always remember Wednesday nights as “Grandpas’ night”.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Crystal L Gay and her husband Jonathan N Gay of York, sons James M Hildreth, of Otis, Massachusetts, and Christopher M Hildreth, of Nashua, NH, grandchildren Carlie R Welch, Brayden W Gay, Brennan D Gay, Christopher M Hildreth Jr, and Liam D Hildreth as well as his former wife Janet M Hildreth, and former wife Laurie A (Brennan) Teetzel mother to Crystal and Christopher. In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his son William T Hildreth (2021) and his former wife Patricia R (Thomson) Hildreth (2010) mother to James and William.
