Muriel Durgin Obituary

Muriel Jane Low Durgin, 80, of York, Maine, passed away on May 14, 2026. Born in Barre, Vermont, to Kenneth and Dorothy Low, Muriel lived a life marked by intellect, creativity, faith, and devotion to her family and community.

Muriel earned her degree from the University of Vermont in 1967 and went on to build a distinguished career as a mechanical engineer, working on complex defense systems for the United States government during her years with General Electric in Burlington, Vermont. She was a pioneer in a field where few women of her generation ventured, and she brought to her work the same precision and quiet determination that marked everything she did. In 1974, she married Clayton Durgin, and together they built a life in Vermont, raising their family and putting down roots that would endure for decades.

Upon retirement, Muriel and Clay relocated to York, Maine, where she embraced a new chapter with characteristic energy and purpose. She became a cherished member of First Parish Church in York, finding community and spiritual grounding in its congregation. Muriel and Clay were active members of the Mercedes Benz Club of America. Her creative gifts found expression in weaving, sewing, and jewelry making which she approached with the same precision and care that defined her engineering career. Sadly, Clay passed away in 2002, however Muriel carried on an active life and began traveling extensively.  She was also a proud co-founder of the Fabulous Find Thrift Shop, an enterprise born of generosity whose proceeds support local charities and reflect the giving spirit she carried throughout her life.

Muriel is survived by her son, Matthew Durgin, his wife Hillory, and their daughters Grace, Charlotte, and Lila, all of Scarborough, Maine; her sisters Betsy Bogner and Virginia Coolidge of Shelburne, Vermont; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Parish Cemetery in York, Maine.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
