Phyllis C. Cogger Obituary

Phyllis Cogger
January 22, 1930 – June 9, 2025

Phyllis Cogger, a beloved mother, nana, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Born on January 22, 1930, in Somerville, Massachusetts, Phyllis was the youngest child of Forrest C. Symmes and Mary “Mae” Symmes. She was predeceased by her cherished siblings, Cliff and Dorothy.

Phyllis spent her early years in Melrose, Massachusetts, a town that remained dear to her heart. She shared many meaningful memories there, especially with her Aunt Marion. Her childhood was marked by early responsibility and strong work ethics, which are traits she carried throughout her life. Her father operated numerous breakfast and lunch restaurants in the Boston and Cambridge area, known as “Symmes’.” Even as a young teen, Phyllis would often be called upon to help. She’d hop on a train or subway to work as a cashier, waitress, or cook wherever her dad needed her, much to her mother's worry and pride.

After graduating from Melrose High School, Phyllis married in 1950. Before welcoming her first child, Cheryl, in 1959, she held a variety of interesting jobs that reflected her ambition. She worked at John C. Page Insurance and at Plotkin Brothers, a women’s apparel store in downtown Boston. With natural elegance, Phyllis also did some modeling during this time. This was a lesser-known chapter of her life that hinted at her quiet confidence and timeless style.

Phyllis went on to raise three children: Cheryl, Scott, and Doug. Though life presented its challenges, including raising her children as a single mother, Phyllis faced each chapter with strength and grace. In the late 1970s, she made her home in York, Maine, a state she deeply loved. She also lived in Eliot and Newcastle.

Phyllis had a long and respected career at York Hospital, where she served as the Supervisor of the Communications and Admitting Office until her retirement in 1984, a decision made so she could care for her dear friend, Alfred. Never one to stay idle, she later returned to work part-time and found great joy as the evening receptionist at Sentry Hill in York Harbor, working well into her eighties.

A very talented cook and warm host, Phyllis enjoyed the company of good friends, including her long-time companions Gloria and Priscille. She was known for her generous soul, gentle humor, and the devoted support she offered to those around her. She was a good friend to many and a source of quiet strength to her family.

In her final years, Phyllis faced the challenges of dementia. Though the illness gradually took its toll, the deep love she had for her family never faded.

Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of love through her children Cheryl and her husband Peter, Scott and his wife Robin, and Doug; her grandchildren Megan and her husband Brett, Scott and his wife Meridith, Jackson, and Madigan; her great-grandchildren Perseus, Shawn, Garrett, Bow, and Clara.

Her life was one of unwavering devotion to her family and her friends. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In honoring Phyllis’s memory, her family invites all who knew and loved her to carry forward her example of kindness, hard work, and care for others.
