Prazeres Gomes Obituary

Prazeres Gomes, 91, of York, Maine, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 27,
2025, at her home surrounded by family.

Maria dos Prazeres was born in Soutelinho do Mezio, Portugal, on November 27, 1933.
She was the daughter of Jose Augusto and Olinda da Relva Moutinho and loving wife to
Domingos Gomes for 61 years. She grew up in Portugal and then moved to Brazil
where she married and started a family. Eventually, she and her family immigrated to
the United States, first settling in Wallingford, Connecticut, where they lived many years
and have lots of family and friends. For the past 12 years she had been living in York,
Maine, with her son and his family.

Prazeres was a devoted catholic and attendant of Most Holy Trinity Church in
Wallingford, Connecticut, as well as St. Christopher’s Church and Star of the Sea
Church in York, Maine. As the oldest girl in a large family, she grew up helping to take
care of and raise her younger siblings which instilled in her a caring and selfless instinct
to always help others throughout her life. She worked outside the home at various jobs
until retirement but was always a kind mother and Vovó and loved taking care of her
family most of all. She enjoyed making big lunches and dinners and was always
happiest when everyone gathered at her home. Her grandchildren were the love of her
life, as well as her sons, husband, and her brothers and sisters and their family with
whom she always kept in touch almost daily.

She is survived by her children, Celio Gomes and his wife, Jeannine; Edson Gomes and
his wife, Amy; her grandchildren, Gabriela and her husband Conor, Jeremy, Jordan and
Abigail; her brothers and sisters, Laurinda Ramos, Helena Ferreira, Mario Moutinho,
Tony Moutinho, Domingos Moutinho, and Carlos Moutinho, her cousin Hilda Cachucho,
as well as their husbands and wives and many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her husband, Domingos, and her brothers Jose Joaquim Moutinho and
Manuel Moutinho.

Her family will receive family and friends at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long
Sands Rd, York on Friday, February 7 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Following, there will be a
funeral mass at St. Christopher’s Church, 4 Barrell Ln, York at 11:00 a.m. Interment will
be at First Parish Cemetery, in York, ME.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Southern Maine for their care and compassion.
