Raymond Judson Buell Jr. of Cape Neddick, Maine passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Thursday, May 25th. He is survived by his sister, Joy Buell of Gloucester and two nieces who will miss their uncle. They are Nina Ryan Sargent, spouse, Nathaniel Sargent, and daughters, Catherine and Lauren. As well as Susanna Ryan Berger, spouse, Steven Berger, and children William and Aliza.

Born on December 7, 1931 in Newton Massachusetts, Ray was the son of the late Raymond Judson and Maybelle Stackhouse Buell. He graduated from Newton High School in 1949 and Boston University in 1954.

Ray served in the U.S. Army Artillery’s Third Division and served in the Korean conflict. Ray’s teaching and coaching careers spanned 50 years that included The Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Okinawa, Japan; the Philippines; and Germany, as well as in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Ray lived life to the fullest through a variety of multi-faceted interests. He was a world traveler, visiting over 40 countries with a passion for hiking the Swiss Alps in Switzerland. He helped build two log cabins, including his own home, as well rebuilding a 27-foot Torlew cabin cruiser to museum quality. He was a licensed bush pilot in Alaska and an avid photographer.

A lifelong sports enthusiast and former BU Varsity Crew team member, Ray was selected to the 1956 U.S. Olympic Crew Team. He was a long-standing supporter of Boston University’s crew and hockey programs and established the Raymond & Maybelle Buell Crew Endowment Fund at his alma mater.

Ray was a lifelong member of the Christian Science Church and will be laid to rest alongside his parents at a private ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery in Brighton, MA. A memorial service will be held at Marsh Chapel, Boston University at a future date.
