Raymond L. McMahon Obituary

Raymond L. McMahon, born on June 25, 1942, at Bryn Mawr Hospital, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.

Raymond was the beloved son of the late Fladie Clements McMahon and Francis McMahon. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Suzanne, and a loving father to his daughters, Jill (Chuck) Ford and Madison McMahon. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher McMahon. He is also survived by his brother, Francis McMahon (Judy), his nephew Shawn, his niece Emma, his grandsons, Brandon and Riley Ford, and his great-grandchildren, Sunny and Ozzy Ford.

Raymond was a proud graduate of Unionville High School, where he was honored as the most outstanding athlete of his graduating class, earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball, and soccer, and was recognized with a commemorative plaque that still stands in his honor. He was very active in his high school reunions and kept in touch with many of his friends and recently attended his 65th year reunion.  He continued his education at West Chester University.

He dedicated much of his life to education and mentorship, working as a Health and Physical Education teacher in the Colonial School District in Plymouth Whitemarsh for 38 years. He later taught at York High School in Maine.  In addition to teaching, Raymond had a lifelong passion for athletics. He was the owner of Sprite Gymnastics in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and later became the head gymnastics coach at Ursinus College, where he met the love of his life and best friend, Suzanne. His legacy continues there, as his grandson Riley is currently a student at Ursinus College. Over the years, Raymond coached many sports, including soccer, softball, basketball and lacrosse.

Raymond was honored as Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year in 1996 with the Colonial School District.  In 1997 he was named NCGA Division III Coach of the Year and in 2012 was inducted into the NCGA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, a testament to the lasting impact he made on his students and athletes.  His true passion was golf. He was a longtime member of the Ledges Golf Club, where he won the Senior League more times than his family can remember. He was especially proud of achieving a hole-in-one.

In retirement, he enjoyed the time he spent with his daughter Maddie. Ray took her to sporting events, taught her and played golf with her, and never passed up a chance to stop at IHOP, especially when kids ate free. He also cherished traveling, making special memories on trips to Disney with Suzanne, Madison and Suzanne’s family/all the cousins.

Above all, Raymond will be remembered for his ability to connect with others and the countless lives he touched as a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. To his students, he was more than a teacher; he was someone who believed in them often before they believed in themselves.

In his final days, he was surrounded by his wife, Suzanne, and daughters, Jill and Madison, sharing stories, listening to his oldies music, watching his favorite movies and spending time together as a family, just as he would have wanted.

In lieu of a traditional funeral service, Raymond’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life for family and friends in early summer. Details will be shared at a later time. To honor his legacy, the family will also be establishing the Raymond McMahon Scholarship Fund to support a student-athlete pursuing their education.

Raymond will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
