Robert J. Hosey Obituary

Cape Neddick, Maine- Robert John Hosey, 72, passed on Monday,  April 29, 2024. He was born on July 25, 1951 in Bristol, England to Irish parents Ida Bustard and John James Hosey. The family lived in England for a short time, with his sister Deirdre Marie being born in Exmouth, Devon, England. The family moved to Canada in 1960 living in a trailer in the woods of Canada near Ontario. His sister Una was born in Sault Ste Marie, Canada, completing the family.

Rob's father John, always trying to forge a better living for his family, moved them to better opportunities in Florida where Robert graduated from Pompano Beach High School in 1969. He held the record for skipping school to go surfing up the coast. During his teens and early 20’s he worked for his father’s many companies in Florida.

In the late 70’s Robert moved with his father and step family to Kittery Point, Maine working as a glazer for Portland Glass. Then to York where he met his future wife, Beanie Gilchrest. They were married in 1979 on Mt. Agamenticus and their beautiful daughter Shannon Faye was born in 1980 at which time he was lobstering with his trusty dog Loki, with Matt Crawford out of Kittery. In 1982 Robert and family moved to Florida to help his fathers business. Their son, Travis Sean was born in 1985 in South Florida. The family moved back to Beanie’s home town of York where Robert worked for several construction companies staying with Cainbro for many years where he was a millwright, could tie steel, surveyed, and operated many types of heavy equipment. He gave up on heavy construction in 1999 and went to work for Beachmere Inn as a maintenance man retiring at 21 years.

Rob was a wood carving artisan creating wonderful carvings of animals, birds, statues, and mirrors.

In late December 2013 he became a loving grandfather to Violet Stadig who was the light of his life. They played board games and card games together with Violet being the usual winner which he always accepted good naturedly.

Rob is survived by his devoted wife; Beanie Jean Gilchrest Hosey of 45 years, his daughter Shannon and her husband Seumas Stadig, his son Travis; sisters Deirdre Bryant, Una and her husband Fran Will; stepsisters; Jacqueline McNeal and her husband Terry, and Deborah Rudolph and her husband Juan Figueroa; stepbrother Lewis Nelson; several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his mother, father, stepmother Marcia and stepbrother Douglas Nelson, and brother-in-law Bob Bryant.

There will be a private burial service for the immediate family.

We will be celebrating Robert's life with a new age Irish wake (storytelling, Many toasts, food, and a good Irish send off). Saturday May 18 from 1-4pm at the American Legion York Post, Meadowbrook Plaza.

The family would like to offer our thanks and appreciation to the York’s EMTs and police department.
