John's passing has left a huge hole in the fabric of our family of "friends who are like family".
It has left us at a loss for words to sum up over 50 years of friendship. The obituary is perfect, a fitting and loving testimony to a life brilliantly lived. We smiled at the words "morals, madness, and zest for life", having been witness to all those qualities throughout the duration of our friendship, from Sugarloaf to Cape Neddick Beach, to backyard barbecues.
We love the picture you chose; it captures the essence of John and his spirit, always on the brink of breaking into raucous laughter after one of his many and varied "bon mots".
John didn't suffer fools gladly, but he was the most generous of friends; sharing his formidable
gifts with all. He also possessed an unmatched generosity of spirit, which extended beyond his family and friends to complete strangers, who might be in need.
We are all the richer for having known him, and miss him profoundly.

Message to John Stern's family: I'm very sad to hear of John's passing. He and Nancy were such warm, gracious hosts when I visited about 12 years ago, practically out of the blue, as a distant cousin.
