Shirley J. Read Obituary

York, Maine-Shirley Jean Mick was born to Harold L. and Ruth Virginia (Gregory)Mick December 9, 1945, in Lathrop, Missouri.  She passed away December 8, 2021, in York, ME after a brief illness with her children, Jennifer and Mark at her side.

She moved with her family to Golden, CO in 1949, and was a graduate of Golden High School in 1964.  She married Wesley Wayne Eckiss on July 25, 1964 and had two children, Mark Wayne and Jennifer Nadine.  She moved with her children to New Hampshire in 1973 where she was united in marriage to Mark R. Read on December 1, 1973. They moved to York, ME in 1975 where she remained until her death.

During her years in York, Shirley enjoyed working in various retail stores where she greatly enjoyed socializing with the public in addition to her co-workers with many of whom she developed lasting friendships.  She also worked for many years at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where she was dedicated to her work and respected for her accomplishments.


She was an accomplished seamstress and loved making doll clothes for gifts as well as garments for family and friends. She had recently become a prolific mask maker during the ongoing covid pandemic and made over 1000 masks mostly free for people at the start of covid.  In addition, she mastered the art of completing beautiful counted cross stitch pictures which she made for many friends and relatives.

 Shirley is survived by her two children, Jennifer MacCartney and Mark (Rose) Eckiss,  granddaughter Lilyann Eckiss,  sister Dorothy (Robert) Allison, brother David Mick, sisters-in-law Sue Mick and Linda (Tom) Lally, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark R. Read, son Steven Eckiss,  parents Harold and Virginia Mick, sisters Nancy Meisner and Doris Mick, and brother Thomas W. Mick
