Shirley M. Moore Obituary

Shirley M. Moore 92, of York, Maine, died peacefully on May 28, 2021 at Durgin Pines in Kittery, Maine.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 14, 1929, to the late Hugh and Alice Miller, Shirley was raised in Everett, Mass. Upon completion of high school in 1947, Shirley graduated from Massachusetts Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse.

In 1953, Shirley married John Moore and the couple settled in Malden, MA. There, they raised their three children: a son, John, and two daughters, Alice and Holly. In the early 1960’s, the Moore family was drawn to the beauty of the seacoast and purchased property in York Beach, Maine. Retreating from the city and spending summers in York Beach was the highlight of their lives—the glue that bonded the family. The cottage they built on Pine Street served as an enduring refuge for Shirley, where she would often be found on her screened-in porch. After her husband, John, passed away in 1994, Shirley retired at the age of 65 and made her permanent home in Maine, residing in a mother-law apartment adjacent to her son’s home in York (Cape Neddick).

Prior to retirement, Shirley assumed a leadership position as director of a Massachusetts nursing home. Professionally, she was a highly respected, hard-working, and “wonderful” nurse. Shirley was an avid reader, skilled artisan, and seasoned bridge player. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of Church St., in York Beach, Maine, and served as Deaconess. Above all else, however, Shirley often remarked that family was the most important thing to her. She was a generous, kind, loving, and honest woman, who touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents; husband, John; son, John “Chip,” two much-loved sisters, Isabel and Avis, and nephew Arthur. Shirley’s survivors include her daughter-in-law, Susan Moore; daughter, Alice Moore of York and daughter Holly Moore Chase (husband Paul) of Cape Neddick. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Amanda Moore Cutrer (husband, Bill) of York, Maine, Christina Moore White (husband, Jason) of Cumming, Georgia, Joanna Moore Lawrence (husband, Trevor) of Kittery, Maine, and Aaron Chase of Cape Neddick, Maine, and several beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Durgin Pines for the loving care and concern given to Shirley during the two years she was a resident of the facility.
