Susan Ellis Evans passed away peacefully on July 24, 2023 in York Beach, Maine with her family at her side. Susan had very recently celebrated her 80th birthday with her beloved family and this brought her great happiness. She will be forever loved, remembered, and deeply missed by both family and many friends.
Susan was married for 58 years to Bruce W. Evans Jr. He was the love of her life and they shared many fun and wonderful years together. Susan and Bruce raised two children; Nancy Evans Pitt and Andrew Evans, to whom she was endlessly supportive and loving. She adored both her son-in-law, Michael Pitt, and her daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Scott) Evans. Susan’s pride and joy were her five grandchildren; Evan, Susannah and Liam Pitt and Elizabeth and Anna Evans. She loved spending time with each of them and sharing her love of art, reading, knitting, travel and cooking. “Marme” was the kind of grandmother everyone wants, full of big hugs, good advice and always ready with chocolate chip cookies.
Susan was born May 19, 1943 in Irvington, New Jersey where she grew up. She was the only child of her parents, Frank and Clarice (Davis) Ellis. After high school, Susan attended Keystone Jr. College and Upsala College, and later attended Manchester Community College in Connecticut to study fine arts. After marrying Bruce, they primarily lived in Vernon, Connecticut, where they raised their children. For the past twenty years, Susan and Bruce split their time between their homes in The Villages, Florida and York Beach, Maine.
Susan loved all things Maine, especially her home where she summered for the past 50 years. The rocky coastline, sea roses and pine trees were the ultimate backdrop for her art work. Nubble Lighthouse was a regular feature as well. Her paintings will provide her family and friends with ongoing reminders of her incredible artistic ability. In Florida, Susan was a longtime member of The Villages Art League (VAL) and the Village Art Association (VAA). She particularly enjoyed being part of the VAA college scholarship committee for budding art students. Susan was also a longtime member of the Kittery Art Association in Maine.
Susan also loved expressing her artistry through knitting and could often be seen wearing one of her colorful and intricate wraps. With Bruce, Susan was an avid traveler and they travelled the world, often cruising, and found adventure in Europe, Australia, South America and once cruised around Cape Horn. Susan was excited to share her love of travel with her grandchildren, taking them to Alaska and many sunny Caribbean islands over Christmas vacations. Susan was a loyal friend who treasured her friendships. She loved sitting for a chat with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. She treated friends to delicious homemade dinners complete with lobster and blueberry pie.
A celebration of life will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider a donation to Hospice of Southern Maine www.hospiceofsouthernmaine.org.
