York, Maine - Tom Hoffman passed away peacefully at his home on January 15, 2026. Tom was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
He was born on October 19, 1946, to William and Margaret (Hanley) Hoffman. He was raised in Terryville, CT, where he played every sport he could. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 1969 and earned a Master of Education from the University of Maine.
Tom began his career as a teacher and counselor at the middle and high school levels before finding his lifelong calling in textbook publishing. After retirement, he loved exploring the backroads and small towns of Maine, searching for antiques and art. He turned that passion into a successful business, Odd Duck Antiques, where he sold Americana, art, and antiques for many years.
Tom was the consummate coach and could be counted on for words of wisdom when near a tennis court, baseball diamond, or basketball court. He was a longtime member of the York Golf and Tennis Club and the Seacoast Indoor Tennis Club.
Tom is survived by his wife Melissa; his daughter Sarah Dougherty and her husband John; his son Seth Hoffman and his wife Rhianon; and his six grandchildren, as well as his brother Richard Hoffman and his wife Patty. He is also survived by his cherished niece, nephew, and many friends. He was predeceased by his nephew Bill.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at the Second Christian Congregational Church of Kittery on January 31 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in support of The Gilman Clinic at Maine Medical Center, LifeFlight of Maine, or The York Land Trust.
His infectious sense of humor, his always-ready laugh, and his kindness will be missed.
